…and let me learn to reread and edit what I have written. That last line in my missive should read: “Thank you Lucinda for entertain us with your wonderful stories that give respite from today’s realities.”

Well said Lucinda. I'm doing fine, and my home is still standing "Gracias a Dios!" My heart goes out to those who may have experienced less fortunate circumstances than myself during this devastating event. We'll talk soon.

Hector, I'm so happy you are safe, your home intact. That home has family roots that go deep, dear memories and you are the guardian of the place of those family memories. i have been sick with worry that the fire would overtake your home. Take care and be safe. This is going to happen again and each time we have to hope for the best outcome.

Thank you! I’m sure your writing ability to color our world with experiences and personal memories is cathartic for you right now! Bravo. I am now back home from my temporary and volunteered evacuation. The fire came within 2 miles of my home. The air quality is beyond horrible. I am a Native child of Altadena and Los Angeles.and have witnessed good and very bad changes over the past 80 years. I mourn the loss of my childhood ‘playground’ in Altadena and the memories generated there. I love my City of Los Angeles (I live in Eagle Rock) and am heartsick these devastating fires (Palisades, Eaton, Hurst, Hollywood, Studio City and others unnamed), have destroyed so much. I am beyond heartbroken for the loss of wildlife we will never know about. I am saddened by the political maneuvering happening, the blame games that have started, and the nasty comments from politicos outside our area. May karma bite them (equally) in their collective asses for such destructive actions and commentary. This city and its residents need some peace. Let us recover our memories, support each other, build new friendships and mindful awarenesses without confronting the ugly side of humanness. Let us regrow our existences without this grandstanding nonsense. Let those who are compassionate and capable leaders and citizens do their good work. Thank you Luvindsvgotbyourveonderful stories that give respite from today’s realities.

Beautiful heartfelt words from you, Kathy. I was talking to my good friend just yesterday, saying how much i realized that the heartbreak of those of us who are transplants cannot compare to people like her and you and so many more who never knew a home other than the City of Angels. What an apt nickname for this City in this beautiful state. My friend’s family came to L.A. in 1906. Her mother and sister used to say they grew up in paradise. I just feel so deeply for you and the hurt you are going through. And of course we are of like minds when it comes to always including the animals in the devastation and loss of homes and lives. What can we take from this symbolically—does it matter? In just a few days the 2nd inauguration of a monster is going to take place—wasn’t that enough of a catastrophe?

Take care, Kathy. My thoughts are with you and we all know this is not the end and i send you all my hope and strength to get through what might come next

Los Angeles is more than a place. It's a promise of good weather and a brighter future. It’s the promise of landing a good paying job or conquering the largest wave. This week was a time of broken promises. As a native Angelino, I am mourning.

I know you are, Nancy. I have thought of you and all the other people whose roots here are generations deep. Alan and I are heartbroken and our pain surely pales in comparison to others. It is profound and i wonder how much more can we withstand. Y’all take care and stay safe.

Thank you, DEAR SISTER Janine. Our sorrow is great but doesn’t even come close to friends and neighbors whose generational roots are deep, deep.

I wonder how much more, not just California, but our whole country can withstand. As much as is thrown at us is the only answer I can think of and a big part of that survival depends on the good friends, new, old far and near that we have in our lives.

No words… if we are lucky in this life, the stories of our childhood homes, and the voices of family, travel the miles with us as we build new foundations in far flung places. I know that your deep roots, your love, and the strength of your ancestors will get you through this terrible ordeal.

Love to you and Alan. I hope we hear your voice again very soon!

Susan i have thought of you so much as i watched the fires advancing and consuming. i know you have deep memories, love, friends here in L.A. Our history here is short compared to many of our friends.

What next! It’s all the friends, goodness in people we know and love and of course our very roots as you say that will carry all of us through whatever comes.

We’ve got an ordeal coming up that will take all we’ve all got to withstand. i think DT is the biggest catastrophe our nation has faced in centuries

Dear Lucinda, My heart breaks for LA and everyone there, even those of us not there, b/c LA is more than a place, it's iconic. I saw the drone footage of Palisades last night and then of Altadena/Pasadena. I can barely comprehend it. The ugliness of the 7 mile scorch I saw on TV that wiped out PCH blew me away, I love that highway, but the vastness, vastness of that purge of Palisades and Pasadena. OMG. I'm speechless and so sad.

It really is unfathomable. It is exactly like the loss of Lahaina. Not possible and yet it was.

We are so lucky, our house is safe, we are safe and as sad as we are our grief pales in comparison to many of our friends whose roots are generations deep.

I am thinking of you a lot, and hoping you remain safe. Your mentioning Lahaina. We lived on Maui for years--and the Lahaina fire still hurts my heart. I'm so sorry for your friends. Truly. And for all of LA.

I remember reading you lived in Maui or Hawaii. It has been over 40 years since I was there and it was on vacation—Maui truly was the best. When Lahaina burned it didn’t seem possible
