A Jazz Age story that follows Ruby’s exploits from her adventurous only-childhood as the littlest of equals with her charismatic parents to the missteps and triumphs of her adulthood. And, yeah, she got real mad at her man!
Love this one too! The humor and the almost familiar region sayings and descriptions (I grew up in Missouri with parents from Arkansas and a Native American grandmother) touched that part of my heart that makes me want to hear my own mother’s and grandmother’s stories again. I am charmed!
Alan, I'm so pleased to hear your reaction. I wrote this collection of short stories with that very intention--to make the reader/listener want to hear and tell stories. All my stories are fictional but in each there is one kernel of something true that happened in my life and my hope was those kernels would be universal to all our experiences.
Oh, excellent story! Just love Ruby and Jack and Seely and the whole menagerie, Lucinda! You're a wonderful writer. Not only do you tell a good tale but you have a real way with words. I look forward to the continuing saga, whichever way it turns. Thanks for the ride!
Lucinda, you are a born writer, my dear. Died in the wool. You have an eloquent way w/ words, and trust me, I am a discerning reader. Love the stories and lore and also the podcast. You read it well. Continue on in grand style, my dear! I look forward to reading the next episode.
What a story teller you are, Lucinda! You took me back to the movie The Grapes of Wrath which I watched when I was a teenager, and to most recently the movie Killing of the Flower Moon. Your images and characters are so clear that they take on real life. Go, Ruby! I love her!
Nancy what lovely compliments. I am very grateful for your feedback. What I strive for in most of my stories is to evoke memories, relate past issues to present issues, provoke thought and hopefully entertain. BTW I had an Aunt who actually pulled some of Ruby's stunts--such a colorful woman, such a zest for life--she just grabbed fistfuls of it.
I appreciate your support for Corvairs and Horny Toads.
You ARE a part of the population of Dixon, now. It's like The Hotel California. Hope you continue to enjoy, thanks for ridin' shotgun with me on this trip I'm taking.
That was just amazing Lucinda! Where in the world did you get that imagination? I'm so very impressed with your creative writing talent! I very much enjoyed escaping into your story. The characters detailed in the story come to life, especially with your oral narrative! Looking forward to the next chapter!
Thanks, Hector, I'm so flattered and gratified with your praise! it means an awful lot to me.
Sunday is my round-up/bonus content...haven't decided what i call the alternate week post. But I hope you enjjoy it and look for my next podcast--a story with a completely different slant. i think you will like.
Thank you, thank you, thanks for ridin' shotgun with me on this journey.
Your voice is officially my car companion while I’m behind the wheel. I circled the block and did a detour because I needed to hear how Ruby took care of things. A great, compelling story and I want more! But I’m charging you for gas….
This is music to my ears, Susan. And there's more coming... BTW It was roughly around the time period of some of my stories that Priscilla Gibson aka Lucinda Blackwood could whip into the filling station, ask the attendant to put a dollar's worth of regular in my Corvair and to put it on Daddy's account then tear off to go drag mainstreet.
Lucinda, my favorite expression of yours: a purple passion!! I adore your style...I can envision every character, and I feel a kinship with Ruby...you go girl!
It is definitely a thing! I loved it when I was growing up. But it has to be a real glass bottle (just for aesthetics) and don't try to fill it up too much with peanuts -- you can always add more as you go. A couple of real good gulps of Coke will give you enough room to get started!
We’re on the road again (headed south). What a wonderful gift for us to be able to listen to your stories while we drive. Mesmerizing narrative voice. Looking forward to more!
Intrigued. As Ruby travels down the road with Eula, one wonders what comes next! ? You certainly captured the West Texas-East Nee Mexico cultural nuances.
Oh yay. I love getting this feedback from you. Knowing New Mexico as you do and my particular upbringing in NM just minutes from the Texas line my goal is to leave ambiguity about whether it's NM or TX as well as the exact time of each story. and for "Ruby" i wanted to leave everyone wondering what was coming next for that Pistol, Ruby. For now, she has her satisfaction knowing she's humiliated Willard and speculation will fly. then of course the conversations she and Eula will have on their way to Ruby's next stop in life will be great.
Yet another great story. The characters, if not the situation, resonated with memories of my own family. And, BTW, listened to this story, as opposed to reading it. Both ways are truly marvelous. Can't wait for the next installment
Darling One, Thank you. I'm sure this isn't the first time you've heard me read Ruby. You have the patience of a saint and have been with me on this project for such a long time. Thank you, XOXO, L

A big compliment from such an evocative writer as yourself.
Thanks for ridin' shotgun with me on Corvairs and Horny Toads.

I love the sassy wild adventurous spitfire Ruby!! And I adore her mom... another vibrant snapshot into the human condition! Loved listening.
I'm so pleased to hear that you like Ruby and Seely. Ruby took over my fingers and wrote this story for me.
Thanks for listening and tell your friends! There's lots more to come.
I feel like I am one of the town folk taking it all in. Lucinda easily pulls us into the story and you just want more!

Oh, and tell your friends.
The illustrations also added to the story!

I'm in love with Ruby!
I am, too. She took hold of my fingers and wrote this story herself! Thank you, thank you for listening.

If you feel a kinship with Ruby--so do I--you and I are part of a sisterhood of Kick-Ass women.
By the way, dying to try salted peanuts in a bottle of Coca-Cola :)

Well it's good, but it will spew all over you if you're not careful
I'm going to try it!!

What a gift to me, Matt knowing that you are listening to Corvairs and Horny Toad podcast as you drive. I'm thrilled. I'm gratified. I'm flattered.
Thank you
